Debbie Burton’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she shared her latest adventure. “You know, I’ve always thought of myself as a bit of a homebody. But ever since I married my adventure-loving husband Herb, life has been anything but ordinary!”
It all started back in 1981 when Herb decided to try his hand at skydiving. “I remember staring up at the sky, eight months pregnant with our first child, watching him drop out of that plane. I was a nervous wreck!” Debbie laughed. “Our responsibilities as parents definitely put a damper on Herb’s daredevil ways for a while. But now that we’re retired, the travel bug has bitten us again!”
Last winter, the couple embarked on a trip to Zion National Park, eager to experience the park’s “secret season” – winter. “The snow-covered trails and icy conditions were definitely a challenge, but the breathtaking scenery made it all worth it,” Debbie reminisced. “That trip taught me that sometimes the best adventures come wrapped in unexpected packages.”
Debbie’s blog is a testament to her and Herb’s thirst for new experiences and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. And their latest adventure took them on an eye-opening journey into the world of exotic pet rescue.
Discovering the Joys of Exotic Pet Rescue
“I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical when my daughter Jenny invited me to visit Big Cat Rescue in Tampa,” Debbie confessed. “As a proud beagle owner, I’ve never been much of a cat person. But I’m so glad I went along.”
Big Cat Rescue is a leading voice in the fight against the abandonment and abuse of exotic cats. Debbie was shocked to learn about the sad realities behind the exotic pet trade.

Debbie was deeply moved by the stories of the rescued cats, like Andy, a tiger who had been used for tiger cub petting sessions at a now-closed zoo in Colorado. “Seeing these beautiful animals in their spacious, enriched habitats, cared for with such dedication by the volunteers, really opened my eyes,” she said.
The history of Big Cat Rescue itself is equally compelling. Founder Carole Baskin’s journey began accidentally when she took in a bobcat named Windsong, and then later rescued dozens of bobcat kittens from a fur farm. “Carole and her husband made a lot of mistakes in the beginning, but they’ve since evolved their mission to focus solely on providing the best possible care for these animals and educating the public about their plight,” Debbie explained.

Debbie’s visit to Big Cat Rescue left a lasting impression. “I came away with a deep respect for the work they’re doing. These sanctuaries are on the front lines of a crucial battle – not just to save individual animals, but to end the exotic pet trade altogether.”
The exotic pet industry is fueled by the misconception that big cats, primates, and other wild animals make suitable companions. But the reality is far more grim. “These are incredibly intelligent, complex creatures with specialized needs that simply can’t be met in a home environment. The result is often neglect, abuse, and heartbreaking abandonments.”
Sanctuaries like Big Cat Rescue are not only providing lifelong care for their rescued residents, but they’re also advocating for legislative changes to protect both animals and the public. “It’s an uphill battle, but they’re making real progress. And as consumers, we all have a role to play in supporting this crucial work.”

But now, I’m just as eager to explore the stories behind the scenes – the unsung heroes, the rescued animals, the battles being fought for a better future.”
As Debbie and Herb continue to embark on their next great adventure, she knows that the real treasure lies not in the destination, but in the journey itself. “Sure, the risks and challenges can be daunting at times. But that’s where the real growth and transformation happen. And that’s what makes it all so worthwhile.”
So, what’s next on the horizon for this intrepid couple? Debbie grins mischievously. “Who knows? But I can’t wait to find out. After all, the world is full of wonders just waiting to be discovered. All you have to do is take that first step.”
