They opened their first tropical fish store, Pet Zone Tropical Fish, in the Convoy District of San Diego. “Aquascaping is still in its infancy stage here in the states,” Roger explains, “and has grown tremendously due to stay-at-home orders this past year and a half. We got inspired after traveling to numerous aquascape galleries in Europe and Asia and saw there was a need to grow this hobby and get more people to see it as a form of art.”
Fueled by their experiences abroad, Roger and his team knew it was time to take their passion to the next level. In 2021, they opened the doors to Hakkai Aquascape Design Gallery, San Diego’s first dedicated aquatic art studio and gallery.

Finding the right commercial space that would accommodate their aquarium setups was a challenge, as many landlords were wary of potential water leaks.
