Yet, that’s precisely what happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people turned to the companionship of furry friends to weather the storm of uncertainty. Thousands rushed to adopt pets, seeking the comfort and order that caring for an animal could provide.

Alongside our Genet, we’ve had the pleasure of sharing our lives with a veritable zoo of captivating companions – from dachshunds and cats to a baboon, duikers, a parrot, and even a colony of Egyptian Cobras. Each one has left an indelible mark on our family, teaching us lessons about the wonders of the natural world and the responsibility we bear as stewards of these remarkable beings.

Failure to provide for their well-being can lead to heartbreak and tragedy, as I’ve learned all too well through the loss of my beloved pets over the years.
The death of a beloved pet can be utterly devastating, a painful reminder of our own mortality and the fragility of life. Whether it’s the sudden passing of a dog or the slow decline of a feline friend, the grief can be overwhelming, leaving us feeling helpless and bereft.

From the duikers that couldn’t quite adapt to captivity to the suicidal jackals that met their demise all too soon, the toll has been heavy.

But amidst the pain and loss, there have been moments of pure, unadulterated joy – the times when I’ve witnessed the true elegance and wonder of these captivating pets. Like the day I watched our Genet deftly scale a bookcase, defying gravity with effortless grace, or the time I marveled at the mesmerizing dance of our Discus fish, their iridescent scales shimmering in the aquarium’s light.
These are the moments that make the challenges worthwhile, the instances that remind us of the magic that can be found in the most unexpected places.
