Unleashing the Wonders of the Wilds: My Lifelong Passion for Exotic Animals
Oh, how I can still recall the magical moments of my childhood, when I would spend hours upon hours glued to the TV, captivated by the extraordinary adventures of Steve Irwin, the one and only Crocodile Hunter. His boundless enthusiasm and unwavering dedication to the natural world ignited a fire within me that has never ceased to burn. You see, I was a 90s baby, and I grew up in a household where learning wasn’t confined to the traditional curriculum. My brothers and I had the incredible opportunity to dive deep into the subjects that truly spoke to our hearts and souls.
For me, that subject was – you guessed it – the wondrous world of animals, both domestic and exotic. I would spend countless hours collecting caterpillars, lizards, frogs, and worms, carefully crafting custom habitats for my newfound friends. Of course, my skills as a young habitat engineer left much to be desired, and I can still vividly remember the occasional escapee, much to the chagrin of my family. But through it all, my passion only grew stronger, fueled by the captivating educational shows that opened my eyes to the incredible diversity of life on our planet.
As I grew older, I realized that my life’s purpose would always revolve around animals, and that we as a society have a responsibility to conserve their natural habitats. Inspired by the tireless efforts of Steve Irwin, I knew that I wanted to become an advocate for animal conservation and help people overcome their fears and misconceptions about the natural world.
Enchanting Exotic Encounters: Bringing the Wonders of Gliding Possums to Life
And so, with a heart full of wonder and a mind brimming with a lifetime of animal knowledge, I embarked on a journey to share my passion with the world. I founded Totally Enchanting, an Exotic Animal Education Program and YouTube Channel that aims to educate people on the importance of wildlife conservation and the proper care of exotic animals.
At the heart of my program are the Sugar Gliders, or as they’re more affectionately known, the “Gliding Possums.” Now, before you start picturing a cute and cuddly possum, let me tell you – these little critters are in a league of their own. Technically, they’re not possums at all, but rather a unique species of gliding marsupial that hails from the lush forests of Australia.
As a young woman of color, I’ve often been told that “black people don’t mess with weird exotic animals,” but I’ve never let those ridiculous stereotypes hold me back. In fact, I’m on a mission to shatter those preconceptions and inspire others to pursue their passions, no matter how unconventional they may be.
At Golden Exotic Pets, our Sugar Gliders are the true stars of the show. These enchanting creatures are not only fascinating to learn about, but they also make the perfect interactive companions for our educational programs. From classrooms to summer camps, libraries to birthday parties, I bring these amazing animals to life, teaching children (and adults!) about their unique habitats, diets, and care requirements.

But you know, it wasn’t always smooth sailing when it came to my relationship with these furry little flyers. In fact, when I first brought my very own Sugar Gliders home, I was downright terrified of them! Despite all the research I had done, I just couldn’t seem to overcome the initial fear of being bitten by these sharp-toothed critters.
For months, I played with them and tried to bond, but I refused to touch them with my bare hands, opting for gloves instead. I’ll never forget the day when I finally reached out to a Sugar Glider professional, desperate for help. To my amazement, the expert had no trouble handling them with ease and confidence. I was in awe, and I knew I had to overcome my own fears if I was going to provide the best possible care for these amazing animals.
After some guidance and a lot of patience, I finally worked up the courage to hold my Sugar Gliders without any barriers between us. The moment I felt their soft, silky fur and their tiny claws gently grasping onto my fingers, I was hooked. It was as if a veil had been lifted, and I could see the true beauty and gentleness of these creatures. From that day on, I knew that my bond with the Sugar Gliders would only continue to grow stronger.

Today, no one would ever believe that I was once terrified of these enchanting animals. In fact, I now have the privilege of showcasing my beloved Sugar Gliders in all sorts of exciting opportunities, from photo shoots and music videos to media events and educational programs. And let me tell you, the reactions I get from people of all ages are nothing short of pure wonder and delight.
You see, one of the things that sets my Exotic Animal Education Program apart from the rest is the interactive, hands-on approach I take. I firmly believe that the best way to learn about these incredible creatures is to experience them firsthand. That’s why I bring my Sugar Gliders to every single event, allowing participants to safely touch, hold, and even feed these remarkable animals.
